I always thought this was a ‘60s song, but I guess that’s due to the very jangle pop sound of it. The original version by The La’s has been used in a lot of movies (as well as the pilot episode of Gilmore Girls), and a cover version by Sixpence None the Richer (of “Kiss Me” fame) was a Top 40 hit here in the U.S. The original version also charted here, but did not crack the Top 40 (which usually indicates a hit single), although it did very well on alternative rock radio.
