David Sylvian

Another incredible musical influence I discovered whilst babysitting in the 1980’s was Japan.  The couple had a rather amazing vinyl collection, which I was able to play when I sat for them.  The sound of David Sylvian’s voice was, and still is something of pure pleasure to listen to.  I took a few tapes with me when I sat for them and recorded the albums, and when home poured over them in an almost obsessive way.  I could not get enough of Sylvian’s voice, it was like listening to honey being poured.  Again avant-garde music, but with something else attached, maybe its an inner peace, or a deeper understanding of the lyrics?  I don’t know what it is, but his music, no matter who he collaborates with, be it Ryuichi Sakamoto, Ingrid Chavez, Robert Fripp or his solo compositions, I cannot find a track I do not like.

Nine Horses, another collaboration that produced an elequent jazz sound with very deep set of lyrics, and still is something that I listen to all the time.

In 1983, the film “Merry Christmas Mr Laurence” was released, the soundtrack was done by Sakamoto and Sylvian.  Again the music burned into my psyche.  I got a copy of the film on VHS, and quite literally wore it out listening to the music.  I later bought the soundtrack.

I have a love for electronic music including Jean Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream & Bernard Szajner, but Sylvian manages to feeds that love, but like all good food, you want more.

This is the Picture (Excellent Birds)

I have been a fan of both Peter Gabriel and Laurie Anderson for many decades now.  Peter Gabriel is a genius and his music has an addictive quality that seats itself in the far recess of your brain, and once there, you need to feed on his music.  Laurie Anderson, like Gabriel is a genius, but has an Avant Garde style to her music, which I still find refreshing to this day, with tracks like “Language is a Virus” and “Let x=x”.  When they collaborated on “This is the Picture (Excellent Birds)” in 1986 I could have wet my pants with excitement, two of my favorite artists in one hit.  This is the official video after remastering in 2012.

Slipknot – The Devil In I

I love Slipknot, and this video is pure gold.

Other Drivers

Today was one of those days where I found I was surrounded by idiots who really should not be given keys to a car.

6:50 am driving to the city which included high-speed driving conditions as well as standard roads I saw six cars without their lights on.  It was pitch black on the roads with only a few street lights on (due to council cutbacks), so as you could imagine, quite dangerous really, but, it gets worse.  I know, how can it be worse than that, well, one of the vehicles without lights jumped a red light, which could have caused quite an accident.  However, he was not the only one, and I counted eight vehicles that totally disregarded the red light.  How on earth there was not an accident I will never know.

This afternoon, a woman decided to go the wrong way on a one-way road and enter a “no entry” road.  Rather than admit that she was wrong, she barraged me with insults and totally ignored that she had broken the law.  She did not bother trying to defend her actions, and amongst other things called me a common little man, how that had any relevance on things, again, I will never know.

I love the fog, especially when I was a Kid in the 70’s it used to be thick as pea soup, and of course called a “pea-souper”. However, these days it seems to be ice cold, wet and not too thick.

One thing that annoys the living daylights out of me is drivers who don’t put their fog lamps on, or as seen this morning, don’t bother with lights at all.  The anger I feel for them is incredible as I want to hurl abuse, drag them out the car and slap them. I think I have anger issues.

Here we go again, another day of eating sweets, carving pumpkins and watching horrors.  The only thing that really changes for us is the addition of the pumpkin.  We tend to each sweets and watch horrors all the time.

Each year I have carved a different pumpkin monster, but this year I really have no ideas of what the hell to do.

Thinking caps on, and internet at the ready for ideas.

Watch this space

I have a little niggle of a toothache, top right.  I can live with it, but some things are a little hard.  Eating on the left, not hard, but not used to that.  Drinking on the left, a little harder, but manageable. Not sucking hard and creating a vacuum in my mouth pulling on the loose filling, harder, but again, I can do it.

The solution so far is to use clove oil and instant relief toothpaste till I can afford to be robbed at the dentist.

Who said life was a bowl of cherries.
